Does shaving cream protect the skin while handling lead-containing solder or other metals?

I am an artist learning to make stained glass, using leaded solder and came. I was told that rubbing shaving cream on my hands would form a protective lead-barrier for handling the solder.

This 'shaving cream' protection technique is used by guys at the telephone company who handle wires or something with lead.Does shaving cream protect the skin while handling lead-containing solder or other metals?
I doubt it. I would have thought gloves would be better if you're worried.
